First of all, congrats on surviving the round of layoffs. Phew!

You make an interesting point. Here's an anecdote that might reinforce it. I was once part of a super senior team that was laid off to cut costs. Granted, we weren't the first to be "let go," but we weren't the last either. Being too senior (aka expensive) might be a disadvantage when a company is running out of money.

I appreciated the emphasis you put on long-term thinking and sustainability. With rising longevity, we can all expect to have long careers. The goal should be to stay in the game as long as possible and to leverage compounding. One should beware of working so hard that they'll burn out or to put all eggs in one basket. The goal of the game is to keep playing for as long as possible.

If I may share a post of my own, another strategy is to become a synergist engineer. Don't aim for being the best at one thing, aim to be the only one that combines a certain skills set. https://mokagio.substack.com/p/the-synergist-engineer
